Limits and messages

How big things can be

What Limit
A chart's size 10 to 1,500 stitches a side
Threads in a chart up to 100
Layers in a chart up to 32
A photo to chart up to 25 MB, and 50 million pixels. JPEG, PNG, WebP and SVG work everywhere; an SVG is drawn 4000 pixels on its longer side.
An OXS file to open up to 64 MB
One chart saved to your account up to 38 MB
A chart to export on the server up to 32 MB
Text one line of up to 100 characters, 7 to 200 stitches high

How much you can keep

These are the starting amounts for an account; some plans may give more.

What Limit
Space for saved charts 50 MB, however many charts
Stamps 100, each up to 4 MB
Palettes 100
Thread systems of your own 10, each up to 2,000 threads

When you reach one, saving another says so: delete one you no longer need first.

Some accounts also have a limit on how many charts they can generate, or exports they can make on the server, in 24 hours or 30 days. Your Usage page shows any limit, how much you have used, and when the next one is free. Exports made in your browser (the editable chart, the palette and the pixel art) are never counted. A photo counts as one generation however often its chart is made again; a new photo counts again.

While a limit applies, the editor says how many are left at the foot of Photo settings and under Export, such as 3 of 5 generations left in 24 hours., and once none is left, when the next one comes. Where a limit needs an account, it says Generating a chart needs an account: log in, or register., with both as links that bring you back to the editor.

When the site is busy

Making a chart from a photo, and most exports, run on the site's server, which works on a few at a time.

  • While you wait for a turn, the button says so: Waiting for a free slot…, or for a chart, your place in the line.
  • The chart service is busy or The export service is busy. Try again in about n seconds. Too many people are waiting already: try again after that long.
  • Too many requests from this address; wait a moment and try again. Up to 30 charts, photos and exports a minute are taken from one address.
  • You have as many charts and exports in progress as one person may at once. Wait for one to finish. Up to four of your charts and exports are made or wait their turn at once, so a busy moment is shared out fairly. A long multi-page export never takes the last free slot, so a chart can still start beside it.
  • Couldn't reach the chart service or the export service. Check your connection and try again. Your computer could not reach the site.
  • The job ran past its time limit. A very big chart took too long. A smaller chart, or fewer colours, is quicker.
  • The server no longer has that photo. Choose it again. A photo is kept on the server for 30 minutes after it was last used.
  • This chart is too large to render as a single image. The chart is too big for one picture: export the A4 pages instead.

Messages like these stay until you close them with their cross, or until the next thing you do replaces them.

When a file won't open

Nothing is replaced, and the message says why:

Message What it means
That file isn't valid JSON. / That file doesn't look like an editable chart. It is not a chart saved from this site.
That file was saved by a newer version of this app… Reload the page to get the latest version, then open it again.
…more than the maximum of 100. / …exceed the maximum supported size… The chart is larger than the limits above.
No chart inside that archive could be opened. No .json or .oxs inside the bundle could be opened; the message lists why for each.
That image has partly transparent pixels… Pixel art: each pixel must be fully there or fully empty.

Logging in and saving

  • Invalid email or password. Check both, and try again.
  • Enter your email address. / Enter your password. A field was left empty: the cursor is put in it.
  • Confirm your email address first: open the link we sent to it.
  • Too many attempts. Try again in a few minutes. Logging in is paused after several wrong tries.
  • Couldn't reach the server, so the chart was not saved to your account. Check your connection, or save to a file.
  • Autosave unavailable — edits won't survive a reload (in the status bar): this browser would not keep the chart. Save it to a file or to your account. See Saving and your account.

When a tool won't draw

  • Layer 2 is hidden: show it to draw on it. / Layer 2 is locked: unlock it to draw on it. See Layers.
  • + Add is greyed out in the thread list once a chart has 100 threads. See Colours and threads.
  • Add under Text says why it is greyed out. See Text.
