Saving and your account
Autosave
Every chart you have open is saved in this browser as you work, a moment after each change and when you close the page. The status bar says Saving… and then Autosaved. Coming back to the site opens your charts where you left off.
Several charts open
Starting or opening a chart never replaces the one you have: it opens beside it, in a tab of its own under the top bar (on a phone, under Open charts in the Menu). Choose a tab to go back to that chart, with its undo history, its photo and the view you left it in. A new chart started from an empty editor opens in place.
A chart that is saved nowhere but this browser, neither to your account nor as a file, has a dot on its tab.
Closing a tab (its ✕) asks nothing: the chart goes to Recently closed, at the end of the row, and opens again from there whole, photo included. Closed charts are kept for 30 days, or the newest 20.
There is no limit on how many charts are open. If the ones you are not looking at grow too large for the browser's memory, the undo history of the one you looked at longest ago is let go; the chart itself is kept, and it tells you when you next go back to it.
The same chart in two browser tabs
The charts you have open are this browser's, so every tab of the site shows the same ones: a chart opened or closed in one tab is opened or closed in the others.
A chart open in two tabs can be changed in either. Each change shows in the other tab a moment later, as one step you can undo there.
Back to the editor, on the guide, What's new and other pages opened in a tab of their own, closes that tab when the editor is already open in another one, so you go back to it instead of starting a second.
If the status bar shows Autosave unavailable — edits won't survive a reload in red, this browser would not let the site keep the chart (its storage may be full, or blocked). Save the chart to a file or to your account before you close the page.
A chart saved again from another browser
A chart you opened from your account keeps an eye on the copy in your account while you look at it: every minute, and at once when you come back to the page. If it was saved again from another browser or device, a strip above the chart says when, and offers:
- Update takes the saved version. It is one step: Undo brings back what you had here.
- Save current as copy keeps what you have here as a new chart in your account, and you go on editing the copy.
- Keep editing leaves both as they are. The next time you Save, you are asked again.
In Preferences, under Charts saved to your account, Take it updates the chart by itself when you have nothing unsaved here, and tells you it did. With changes not yet saved to your account, you are still asked.
The Save menu
Save, in the top bar, saves the chart two ways.
To your account (you need to be logged in):
- Save keeps the chart in your account, to open in any browser. After the first time it saves over that copy, and shows when it was last saved.
- Save as copy keeps a new copy, and you go on editing the copy.
If the same chart was saved from somewhere else since you opened it (another browser, say), you are asked first, so nothing is lost by accident: Update to that version, Save current as copy, Save over it, or Keep editing (see above).
To a file: Save to file downloads the editable chart (.json). It holds everything in the chart, every layer
and the backstitch included, and opens here again just as it was. It is the same file as the Editable chart
export. See Exports and files.
Opening a chart
On the start screen, Open a saved chart opens:
- an editable chart (
.json) saved from this site; - an Export all bundle (
.cspzipor.zip): the editable chart inside it is used; - an OXS chart (
.oxs) from another cross stitch program. A note says what came across, and anything that did not.
The chart is named after the file. If a file can't be opened, nothing is replaced and a message says why. See Limits and messages.
The start screen also offers Choose a photo (see From a photo to a chart), Start an empty grid of 10 to 1,500 stitches a side, and Import pixel art: one pixel of a PNG, GIF, WebP or BMP image becomes one stitch, in its own colour. Pixel art may have up to 100 colours, and no partly see-through pixels.
Your account
Register with your email and a password of 8 to 72 characters. You may be sent an email to confirm the address first: open the link in it (it works for 48 hours), then Log in. No email? Press Send it again: it goes to the address you typed. Show beside a password shows what you typed.
When a page asks you to log in, logging in (or registering) brings you back to that page. Logging in from the editor brings you back to the editor, with your chart as it was.
Once you are logged in, your name at the right of the bar opens a menu: Your account, and Log out.
Leaving a field empty when logging in says so beside it, and puts the cursor there.
At the foot of every page outside the editor are links to the terms of service, the privacy policy, this guide, What's new and Contact, which gives the address to write to. Pressing Tab first on any page offers Skip to content, which goes past the bar to the page itself.
Your account's pages are listed down the side:
| Page | What is there |
|---|---|
| Charts | The charts saved to your account. |
| Projects | The charts you are stitching, with how far you are. See Stitching from a chart. |
| Stamps | Your stamps. See Stamps. |
| Thread systems | Thread systems of your own. See Colours and threads. |
| Plan | Your plan, and what it gives you. |
| Usage | Any limits on how much you generate and export, and how much is left. |
| Preferences | Your settings for the editor and for exports. |
| Profile & log-in | Your name, email and password, and deleting your account. |
Changing your password logs out every other device logged in to your account, within a few minutes. The device you changed it on stays logged in.
Your saved charts
Charts lists the charts saved to your account, with a preview, the size, the number of colours and the thread system of each, and when it was saved. Press a chart to open it in the editor. You can search by name and sort by Recent, Name or Size; pinned charts always come first.
Each chart has Pin, Rename and Delete… (asks first, and can't be undone). To copy a chart, open it and use Save as copy. Start stitching starts a project to mark your stitches on: see Stitching from a chart.
The top of the list shows how much space your charts use. There is no limit on how many you keep, only on the space: 50 MB to begin with. A save that would go over it is refused: delete a chart, or save to a file instead. One chart may be up to 38 MB.
Plans
The Plan page shows your plan and what it gives you. Every account starts on Free. Paid plans are not on sale yet.
Back from paying for a plan, the Plan page shows it as soon as the payment is confirmed, usually within seconds, with no need to reload. If it has not come after a minute, the page says so: press Check again.
Deleting your account
In Profile & log-in, under Danger zone, press Delete account…, type your email to confirm, and press Delete my account. Your account and everything kept with it are deleted, and can't be brought back, and a page says so. Charts saved to your account go with it: to keep one, open it from Charts and export it or save it to a file first. A chart open in the editor in this browser stays there.
